A Brook by the Wayside

A traveler plods through the forest, a faint trail ahead of him. When he stops to rest his legs, he spies a brook not far from the path, so he pushes the branches aside to investigate. He scoops up a drink, splashes cold water on his face and lets the cool air drift over him. The traveler rolls onto a patch of moss and gazes into the forest. He will rest here awhile.

At times, we are like the traveler, weary from the trail of life. We need to find a brook by the wayside where we can rest and be refreshed by reading God’s word and spending time in his presence. As we do this, God strengthens us and renews our perspective. We are encouraged for the journey ahead (Psalm 110:7).

A Brook by the Wayside is a Bible-study blog, intended to foster discovery and application of the truth of God’s word.

The Bridge is a page for those with questions about life who may not be familiar with the Bible but who are looking for answers and hope.

I hope you will gain from the content of these pages, and I look forward to your comments and discussion!

Perhaps we are leading a Bible study, or discipling somebody in their walk with God, or we are leader in a local church. “All of the above” applies. The garden of our…

Tending the Garden – My Neighbors The Greek words for “neighbor” in the New Testament “…have a wider range of meaning than that of the Eng. Word ‘neighbor.’ There were no farmhouses scattered over the agricultural areas of Palestine; the populations, gathered in villages, went to and fro to their toil. Hence domestic life was…

Tending the Garden – My Family As we tend to the garden of our heart, we are in a better place to tend to the garden of our family. When we walk with God, abiding in the vine, we are the living examples our children need, through the good times and the bad. What better…

Tending the Garden – My Heart I’ve always liked the taste of carrots fresh from the garden, or a juicy peach recently picked from the tree. To raise vegetables or cultivate a fruit tree, however, requires much work. The bounty of the garden and the orchard begins much earlier than the day of harvest and…

True Value (Part 3 of 3)

150 150 D. Howard

God is a gift giver. First, he gave us existence, the opportunity to know what is good and bad, the chance to experience love and life. We didn’t earn the right to exist, he just created us. We also didn’t earn the regeneration of our soul or salvation from punishment: it’s the product of his…
